Ever wondered what a typical day looks like in my family day care? I am excited to give you a peek into our daily rhythm—a gentle blend of play, learning, routine, and love that helps little ones feel safe, happy, and confident as they grow.
At my family day care, each day is carefully planned to meet the needs of every child, while still allowing the magic of spontaneity and exploration to shine through.
☀️ Morning Welcome
As the day begins, I welcome our little learners with warm smiles and hugs. Children arrive with their families, settle in and start their day with quiet play. This could be reading a favourite book, playing with blocks, or simply chatting about their morning.
I always take time to connect with each child and parent, ensuring a calm and supported transition from home to care.
🍎 Morning Tea & Group Time
After a healthy morning snack—usually fruit or yoghurt—we come together for group time. This includes songs, stories, and discussions about the day. Whether it’s learning about colours, animals, or seasons, I make sure every child is engaged and included.
This is also when I talk about feelings and use simple mindfulness techniques, like breathing or gratitude, to help children feel centred.
🎨 Play-Based Learning Activities
Now it’s time for fun, hands-on learning! Depending on the day, children might:
Paint, draw or do craft
Build with blocks or loose parts
Play pretend in our home corner
Explore sensory bins
Garden or care for our pet guinea pig
These activities are all designed to develop fine motor skills, creativity, problem-solving, and imagination—while having loads of fun.
🥗 Lunch & Rest Time
Lunch is a nutritious, home-cooked meal shared together at the table, promoting healthy eating habits and social skills.
After lunch, it’s time for a well-deserved rest. Some children nap, while others enjoy quiet time with books or toys, depending on their needs and routine.
🧩 Afternoon Activities & Outdoor Play
As the children wake, we ease into the afternoon with relaxed play and movement. When the weather’s nice, we head outside to play in the garden, climb, run or water our plants.
Outdoor time is a favourite part of the day—children develop coordination, teamwork, and a love of nature.
🍌 Afternoon Snack & Home Time
A light afternoon snack rounds out the day, followed by more free play or one-on-one time with the educator. As parents arrive, we share highlights of the day, funny stories, and any milestones or new things their child did.
💛 Every Day is Special
While the days follow a routine, no two are ever quite the same. Children are free to explore, ask questions, and express themselves in a calm, caring environment.
We believe family day care should feel like a second home—filled with laughter, learning, and love. If you’d like to see our day in action, I would love to invite you for a visit.
